Acrylonitrile is used principally as a monomer to prepare polyacr ylonitrile, a homopolymer, or several important copolymers, such as styrene-acr ylonitrile (SAN), acr ylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), acr ylonitrile styrene acrylate (ASA), and other synthetic rubbers such as acr ylonitrile butadiene (NBR). Hydrodimerization of acr ylonitrile affords adi ponitrile, used in the synthesis of certain nylons.
